Are you better served by a map?
Or by a compass?
When the challenge you face is well known, there will be an existing map. It may not be 100% accurate, or serve your exact purpose, but it is a starting point. In other cases, when the terrain of your challenge isn't well known, or changes all the time, all you might have is a compass to keep you on track.
