How does your technology control you?
Father John Culkin observed:
We become what we behold. We shape our tools and then our tools shape us.
This quote is often mis-attributed to Marshall McLuhan, a friend of John Culken, but you can see why - it is an idea McLuhan is famous for expanding on.
So the question here is:
How does the technology you use ultimately change and control you?
Like a fish not aware of the water it lives in, at first it is easy to dismiss this question and think you are in control, but here are some additional questions to ask yourself to gain some clarity:
- How has your life improved, and how has it been harmed by smartphones, social media, 24 hour news...
- How has society changed as a result?
- What actions can you take, now, to reduce the harm?
- What can be done to improve the tools we use, based on the above realizations?
